Summary:

The number of predicted small dark matter halos in hierarchical structure formation models differs from the number of observed small galaxies. This workshop will concentrate on the lowest-mass galaxies known (particularly dwarf spheroidal galaxies) and on candidate low-mass galaxies (such as compact high velocity clouds). We will review results from extensive recent and ongoing observational campaigns such as the search for extratidal stars around dSphs, new measurements of velocity dispersions and rotation curves, high-resolution radio observations, searches for optical counterparts of CHVCs, and searches for CHVCs in other galaxy groups. We will discuss the resulting constraints on dark matter and unrecognized dark matter halos.

Planned topics include:

  • Predictions from CDM models and missing satellites
  • CHVCs as missing satellites: pro and con
  • Dynamical evidence for dark matter
  • Galaxy structure and rotation curves
  • Velocity dispersions: pro and con for dark matter
  • Streams and Galactic (sub)structure
  • Star formation histories and feedback in very low-mass galaxies
Workshop format:

The workshop will last five days from Monday, July 30, through Friday, August 3. We will have about 40 talks with an average of 9 talks per day. Talk times range from 20 to 30 min (40 min in a few cases) excluding discussion. Each talk is followed by 10 min of time for discussions. There will also be two major discussion sessions on Tuesday and Thursday dedicated to CHVCs and dark matter in dSphs. For details please see the workshop program.

Wednesday afternoon is free and can be used for hiking, sailing, etc.

Location and logistics:

The workshop will be held at Ringberg Castle in Bavaria, Germany. Ringberg Castle, the conference site of the Max Planck Society, is about 50 km south of Munich near the small town of Rottach-Egern and Lake Tegernsee. When arriving by plane, the closest airport is Munich airport. Ringberg can be reached get by train and cab, or by car. For instructions please see this link. If you plan to travel to Ringberg by train, you can check out the time table of the train connections here. We recommend to schedule your travel such that you arrive on Sunday, July 29 and depart on Saturday, August 4.

Due to space limitations at Ringberg Castle, the number of attendees is limited. Also, not all attendees will be able to stay at Ringberg Castle. We reserved a small number of rooms at the nearby Hotel Franzen in Rottach-Egern. Meanwhile all the pre-reserved rooms have been filled.

For more information including prices for lodging and meals at the conference site please refer to this URL.

Registration:

The registration deadline was May 20, 2001. All available slots have been taken. We regret that we can't accept additional participants. The registration fee will probably be US$ 50 (payable on site after arrival). We regret that we cannot offer financial support to the attendees.
