Summary:

This workshop will concentrate on processes governing the chemical evolution in all types of dwarf galaxies. We aim at obtaining a comprehensive picture of the history of chemical enrichment. Special emphasis will be placed on identifying common properties and globally valid relationships, on highlighting the differences between the various types of dwarf galaxies, and on the origin of these differences. Intrinsic evolutionary effects and externally induced environmental effects will be discussed in depth.

Topics include:

  • Nucleosynthesis processes and feedback/mass loss
  • Detailed element ratios and implications
  • The oldest populations and correlations with high-z absorption line studies
  • ISM vs. stellar abundances
  • The observed age - metallicity evolution
  • Abundance gradients, spreads, and degree of chemical inhomogeneity
  • Drivers of chemical evolution: Environmental effects vs. intrinsic characteristics

Workshop format:

After arrival on Sunday afternoon, the workshop will begin on Monday morning (July 29, 2002) and end on Friday after lunch(August 2, 2002). Talk times will be ~30 min including discussion. There will also be additional discussion sessions every day.

Location and logistics:

The workshop will be held at Ringberg Castle in Bavaria, Germany. Ringberg Castle, the conference site of the Max Planck Society, is about 50 km south of Munich near the small town of Rottach-Egern and Lake Tegernsee. When arriving by plane, the closest airport is Munich airport. Ringberg can be reached get by train and cab, or by car. For instructions please see this link. If you plan to travel to Ringberg by train, you can check out the time table of the train connections here (recommended destination: Tegernsee). We recommend to schedule your travel such that you arrive on Sunday afternoon, July 28 and depart on Friday afternoon, August 2, after lunch. We can't enter the castle's premises prior to that and need to vacate it on early Friday afternoon.

Due to space limitations at Ringberg Castle, the number of attendees is limited. All participants shoul meanwhile have received notification whether they can stay at Ringberg or at one of the two hotels in Kreuth in which we pre-reserved rooms. The castle is booked out at this point. If you are staying in one of the hotels we will provide transport to the castle through a minivan. Details will be sent by e-mail. Walking to the castle takes approximately 30 - 50 min.

For more information including prices for lodging and meals at the conference site please refer to this URL. Please note that the prices on this page have slightly increased as compared to last year.

Optional tours:

We will have a free afternoon on Wednesday for optional hikes and tours. We will organize a trip to the ``Wallberg'', a mountain in the vicinity that can be reached by cable car (or by hiking up), and a subsequent evening in a traditional Bavarian restaurant/beer garden with regional food. If you wish to participate in this outing please indicate this on the registration form. We will provide the bus transport for free.

Registration:

The registration fee will be Euro 100 (payable on site after arrival). The registration deadline was April 25, 2002. Registrations are now closed, and the registration form has been taken off-line. If you did pre-register but did not receive the call to register, please contact me.

We regret that we cannot offer financial support.
