30km, the journey takes about 1 hour, and the reference taxi price is about 100-110 yuan;

16km, the journey takes about 38 minutes, and the reference taxi price is about 50-70 yuan;

950m, it takes about 16 minutes to walk.

Important information

Volunteers will provide help at Dali airport and railway station, if you arrive Dali between 9:00 and 20:00, June 23. In China now most travel is done without cash, using certain cell phone apps (see more details below), which are very common in China. The following advice assumes that you may not have been in China before and are not familiar with those, you just arrive with some cash (CNY). ApplePay or GooglePay usually do NOT work; foreign credit cards may or may not work (generally not in shops or restaurants), to get cash at ATMs ok (try Bank of China, or ICBC). It should be still ok to pay in cash in shops or restaurants out of campuses, but since it is unusual there may be problems with change.


Travel Advice


1) make sure you have well legible printout of your hotel name in Chinese and English, including full address and phone number. Taxi driver usually don't speak English.


2) make somehow clear to the driver before starting that you want to pay cash (CNY), wave a CNY bill... Usually payment here is with cell phone, like wechat or alipay. Clever taxi drivers expect most foreigners paying with cash, but there can be a problem, e.g. with change after arrival. Hotel reception may be asked to help.


3) my taxi app says from Dali airport to Dali Old Town Uni campus ~30 km, 50-60 minutes, 60-80 CNY, but the metered taxi may be about 50% more expensive, which is ok; notice that the exact amount depends on traffic, and may be higher . At airports there is usually an orderly taxi queue, where passengers wait in a queue and get assigned to licensed metered taxis.


4) it is possible to book transfer airport-hotel via the travel web portals, like trip.com or booking.com , they typically charge like 15-20 EUR, and will wait with a name plate for you at the airport.


5) Beware of taxi touts who want to sell you expensive taxi trips to the city.


Other General Advice


Mobile payment: it is possible to prepare and use Alipay (Zhi Fu Bao - 支付宝) or wechat pay (Wei Xin - 微信) with foreign credit cards before or after arrival. Here is a guide by Chinese gov: https://english.www.gov.cn/images/Guide-to-Payment-Services-in-China.pdf


Most instant-message apps including whatsapp / telegram / line do NOT work in China. Recommended messenger in China is WeChat (Wei Xin), which can be downloaded and used by anyone all over the world. Note that also google map and other websites may not work in China. bing map works well, and there are also Chinese maps like amap (Gao De Di Tu - 高德地图) or baidu map (Bai Du Di Tu - 百度地图) in advance. Consider to install a VPN e.g. of your home university in advance.

The Silk Road Astronomy Research and Education Alliance (Silk Road AREA，丝路天文联盟) is pleased to announce its inaugural meeting, formerly known as the Korea-China-Kazakhstan Meeting or Silk Road Meeting. This event aims to unite global experts to explore the frontiers of dynamical astronomy with high-performance computing, artificial intelligence, and other astronomical research. It will be an excellent platform for sharing knowledge, fostering collaborations, and discussing the future directions of astronomical research.
