The course is given in a block format consisting of morning and afternoon sessions over two weeks with written exam at the end. As successful exam as well as participation in the additional seminar is required to complete the course. IMPRS PhD students do not have to take the exam, but are expected to participate in the seminar.

Target audience: Master students with an interest in astrophysics

Most of the light we observe in astrophysics stems from stars, whether they are in the Milky Way or beyond. With their nuclear fusion and their complex interaction with their environment, stars are the engines of the cosmos. In this lecture, we will introduce the physical concepts to describe and understand stars. It will provide an overview of the structure, life, and death of different types of stars, introduce the concepts of their interaction and feedback, and cover the main aspects to describe and model their spectral appearance.

This lecture as well as the associated tutorial and seminar will be held in English. The main goal of the lecture is to introduce the basic concepts of stellar astrophysics regarding stellar atmospheres, stellar structure and stellar evolution. The seminar talks enable a deeper look into specific topics and current research questions.
